Nutrition to Support Brain Health & Offset Brain Injuries
In this episode, I discuss nutrition and supplementation to reduce the risk of brain injury and enhance brain performance and long-term health. Most brain injuries, including traumatic brain injury (TBIs) and concussion, are not from sports and are actually quite common in non-athletes. I explain what happens in the brain when a TBI occurs and discuss science-supported nutrients to reduce the risk of brain injury, minimize symptoms, and improve recovery.
Summarizing both research and clinical studies, I explain the neuroprotective effects of specific nutrients, including creatine monohydrate, fish oil (DHA and EPA), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), choline, branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), magnesium, and anthocyanins. I also describe the recommended dosages, frequency, timing, and potential adverse effects and provide options for supplementation and whole-food sources.
Listeners of all ages and backgrounds will benefit from understanding which nutrients can support acute brain injury and natural age-related cognitive decline.

That’s the worst kinda of presentation and teaching!!!… sorry it is critical but you should know what you’re doing….jumping from one category to the other one!….man, just split it in 2 videos with 2 categories!….. there is no white board or presentation to compare them n if split them each fan goes to watch that one. Any way even the way you presenting for each category is a mess!!!

Hey Andy, thank you so much! I recently suffered a medior concussion and was only now able to listen to your podcast. What, besides these nutritional & supplementation protocols, can I do in terms of Behavioural Approaches to remedy my concussion? Put differently, what should the days, weeks & month post-injury look like to recover as quickly as possible? In terms of sleep, rest, but also exercise. I find that my energy is low, but the inactivity is also starting to take it's toll. I would really appreciate any wisdom you can share on this end.

You say the most important driver of hypertrophy is volume, so that's what we should progressively overload, but the program you give here doesn't mention overload through volume, only weight. I'm confused.

Thanks for the info Andy. One of my athletes got to do a muscle biopsy study with you following the 2017 World Championships. I credit lots of his longevity in the sport to the information I got from that biopsy which guided how I wrote his program and he was still making international teams at 35 years old. It’s also helps that Travis Mash was one of my early mentors in coaching and developing weightlifters (and athletes), and he’s still one of my close friends today. While I’m sunsetting coaching (too hard to make a livable income), all of the science still fascinates me. I look forward to seeing more of your content! I have a Junior girl I might need some advice with (snatches 110kg, cleans 135kg, jerks 140kg), so maybe I can make a trip your way again sometime soon! Cheers -Vinh

Hey Andy I’ve started listening to your podcast Perform, you are so clear in the way you explain things, I think you’re great… I have been listening to episode 1. I have a question for you about my resting heart rate… I am a 33 year old female. Weight: 51kg Height: 5 ft 4 inches I have a VO2 max of 46ML/KG/MIN, according to my Garmin watch, which I have been wearing for years now. I have an average resting heart rate of 72 BPM. This seems unusually high going off what you say in episode 1… My current maximum heart rate is 204 BPM, (when running a 5K as hard as I can recently). My heart rate is recorded by my Garmin watch. Would you advise that I get my resting and maximum heart rate investigated? Do these figures seem unusual to you?

15min in. This guy is yapping a lot. The fact that he didn’t mention the most important factor yet is insane. Folks, for most people, the biggest game changer in improving your VO2 Max is your body weight/composition. Most adults are overweight, so lose weight. The weight loss will also help the training.

@DrAndyGalpin For older people who are likely to have greatly lost fast twitch muscles, you want to do power type movements to build muscles at low reps yet you said to build muscles (hypertrophy) you have to do higher reps. These contradict. So how do older people build lost fast twitch muscles?

This gave me an idea, that one could get a scientific research by offering a training program for non-pro enthusiasts, who would follow a plan of an experienced coach that would instruct competeing groups with slight variations to test hypotheses of impact of particular training strategies. Non-pros would sacrifice that last 1 % of the perfornace for price (cheap or free), scientist would get motivated testing subjects for free, and everybode would get the scientifically very detailed and proven insights and pros would get more power by applying it.

01:43:00 To improve VO2 max, you can optimize the stroke volume and A-VO2 difference factors by training across a wide spectrum of exercise intensities. As a rough guideline based on logs of endurance athletes, 70% of training time at 60-82% of heart rate peak, 20-25% of training time at 82-90% of heart rate peak, and 3-6% of training time at 92-93% or higher of heart rate peak.

Love the podcast. Just wanted to say though, the heaviest deadlift is Hafthor @ 1104 lbs, not Andy Bolton's 1008. I believe 26 people are credited with over 1000 lb deadlifts so Andy is not alone on the mountain top any longer. Also, the difference between the raw bench record (782 lbs) and the equipped bench record (1401 lbs) is outrageous. Saying the equipped bench record is representative of the peak of human strength is like saying the highest someone can bounce on a trampoline is representative of peak human power/speed.
